SUBJECT/S: 75TH Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore
JOE O’BRIEN: Shadow Veterans' Affairs Minister, Amanda Rishworth joins us from Ballarat. Good morning to you. This promises to be a pretty moving ceremony, doesn't it with some of these ex-POWs attending today?
SHADOW MINISTER FOR VETERANS’ AFFAIRS, AMANDA RISHWORTH: Absolutely. I think it is a really significant point in our history for the events that led to the fall of Singapore, but also, of course, for those years of internment that those POW's faced, the brutality, the starvation, the horrific nature of those camps have been well documented and ones that I think will be brought to the fore today. I think we will see a moving ceremony of those that made it through and had to rebuild their lives, but also those who never made it from the camps. A third of Australians died in camps because of the horrendous conditions that they faced.
